Within the scope of the research project S4CE (‘Science 4 Clean Energy’) the deliverable “Validation of the fluid migration models”, written by GeoT and project partner Q-con, has been published:
The report comprises the works and results of different approaches for fluid flow models within the United Downs Deep Geothermal Power (UDDGP) and other deep geothermal projects. It focuses on prognoses of induced seismicity and on the calibration of hydraulic models using seismic data.
S4CE is part of the European research programme Horizon 2020. The project aims to develop innovative technologies which help detecting, quantifying and mitigating the risks connected with geo-energy operations in the subsurface, including geothermal energy, enhanced gas recovery, carbon sequestration and unconventional operations.
The German Geothermal Congress 2020, organized by the German Geothermal Association, will take place digitally from 9th to 13th of November. On Thursday the 12th of November, 2:30 pm, Dr. Horst Kreuter will give a talk in Forum 8 on the topic of “lithium in thermal water of the Upper Rhinegraben: Origin and exploitation potential”. GeoT is part of the consortium of the newly launched project CROWDTHERMAL which started on September 1, 2019.
CROWDTHERMAL is a new project funded under the European Union’s Research and Innovation programme Horizon 2020 (grant agreement n°857830) which aims to empower the European public to directly participate in the development of geothermal projects with the help of alternative financing schemes such as crowdfunding and social engagement tools. The 36-months project has held its kick-off meeting in Brussels, on 23 and 24 September 2019. One of the major drivers of CROWDTHERMAL is to support the EU’s strategic objective to decrease dependence on fossil fuels, to create a stable energy market, and to reduce the environmental impact of its energy supply.
In order to reach this goal, the project aims at:
- Understanding the requirements for social licencing and developing a Social Licence to Operate (SLO) model for the different geothermal technologies and installations,
- Reviewing any successful case studies, as well as national/EU bottlenecks to alternative financing of geothermal energy in all EU countries,
- Formulating new financial models for crowdsourcing on a national and trans-national basis, covering individual member-states and Europe as a whole;
- Developing recommendations for a novel risk mitigation scheme that will be complementing the alternative financing solutions while also protecting private investors’ interests;
- Validating findings with the help of three case studies in Iceland, Hungary and Spain;
- Developing core services for social-media based promotion and alternative financing of geothermal projects, working closely with existing structures & conventional players.
Led by the European Federation of Geologists (EFG), CROWDTHERMAL will be implemented by a consortium of 10 partners from 7 European countries, combining extensive experience in large-scale geothermal project development, alternative finance, social media engagement, innovation, education, and international networking on geothermal energy.
Within the CROWDTHERMAL consortium, GeoThermal Engineering GmbH (GeoT) will liaise with relevant ongoing geothermal risk mitigation schemes as well as project developers in order to perform a demand analysis for geothermal risk mitigation in the context of alternative financing schemes. GeoT will identify new types of risks that can be associated with alternative financing methods and social engagement and will propose mitigation tools. GeoT will then propose a draft structure of an auxiliary and alternative pathway to risk mitigation aligned with the instruments brought forward by CROWDTHERMAL. GeoT will also contribute to the economic assessment of the proposed new risk mitigation mechanism.
The second well at the United Downs Deep Geothermal Power (UDDGP) project in Cornwall, England, was successfully completed at the end of June 2019. The well UD-2 has a final depth of 2,393 m MD / 2,214 m TVD. Having reached the Porthtowan Fault Zone, UD-2 will serve as the injection well. The production well UD-1 with a depth of over 5 km has already been completed in April earlier this year.
Preliminary results from drilling the two wells are promising in terms of encountered temperature (around 190 °C at the bottom of UD-1) and the occurence of natural fractures. To properly evaluate the fault structure and well condition and to assess how much geothermal energy can be harnessed from the system, a series of measurements and hydraulic tests will be carried out, likely taking place from August 2019 to March 2020. This will include further geophysical logging measurements and the collecting of sidewall cores.
With its expertise in geothermal reservoir modeling, GeoT is contributing to the UDDGP project through the framework of two research projects S4CE (Science 4 Clean Energy) and MEET (Multidisciplinary and multi-context demonstration of EGS exploration and Exploitation Techniques and potentials), which receive funding from the Horizon 2020 EU framework program for research and innovation.

The United Downs Deep Geothermal Project (UDDGP) in Cornwall, England has reached its target depth on 23.4.2019. The well UD-1 has a depth of 5275 m MD / 5057 TVD.
Over the next days, geophysical logs and hydraulic tests will be run in order to give an indication of the target structure’s permeability. Subsequently, the rig will be moved to start drilling the second well UD-2.
GeoT contributes its reservoir modelling expertise to the United Downs project within the framework of two projects (S4CE / MEET) under the Horizon 2020 EU framework program for research and innovation.
